Music & Me

My name is Abby Matula, or just "Matula" since the music school now has three different Abby's enrolled.  My mom likes to tell people I've been a musician since I was two years old. While she was volunteering at church I snuck away to the chapel and made it into my own personal concert hall, singing "row row row your boat" for all the empty pews. My taste in music has since evolved.

1) A current go to song for me right now is "Resilient" by Rising Appalachia. I really like the folky feel of the music and really connect with the lyrics. The chorus is almost like an affirmation for me.

2) A song that is personally meaningful to me is "You are my Sunshine". If you ask anyone in my family they will tell you that the music gene comes from my mom's side of the family, and while there are about a billion covers of my song, my favorite is the version my dad would sing to me when I was little. Today, my Dad claims to be "tone deaf", but he definitely didn't let that stop him then.

3) I don't know that I could name a specific song, but a music genre  I don't typically connect with is techno music. I think it's interesting the different sounds that can be made via computer, but definitely don't see myself listening to this genre in my spare time.

4) "On this bright Morning" by David Maslanka is a Wind Ensemble piece I had the opportunity to play in high school. The program note attached has always stuck with me, " On This Bright Morning” acknowledges the struggle, and the feelings of pain and loss in times of transition, but embodies the pure joy of realizing the bigger life. On this bright morning, life is new, life is possible." I love how David Maslanka is able to evoke these emotion without lyrics. It's a very powerful and moving piece.

  1. Hey Matula! I think we do have similar taste in music in general to some degree. Which is we all like generally "quiet, soft, relaxing" music. I like your example 1,2 and 4. Because they all fit into this element, giving people peace and energy, how positive!

  2. That first piece is such a beautiful song. And you're right, it is absolutely an affirmation, I feel like I could recite these words to myself in the mirror and feel immediately stronger for it. And I see I am not the only one whose family ingrained You Are My Sunshine into their memory as a young child.

  3. Matulacore. The dynamic ranges on This Bright Morning slays and it’s really well written so I can see why it’s one of your favorites. I feel like it would be fun to play in wind ensemble.

  4. I really like this first song. This is a new one for me but I can see how the chorus of this song is an affirmation for you. I agree with the comment you made about your third song. I think it’s really cool and interesting how people are able to make such complex beats on the computer.
